Kentucky Medicaid · Pillar Overview

How Kentucky Medicaid covers drug & alcohol rehab

Kentucky Medicaid is one of the most comprehensive Medicaid programs in the country for substance use disorder treatment. Six managed care organizations and the state's 1115 waiver give members full ASAM continuum coverage.

Kentucky's MCOs

If you have Kentucky Medicaid, your benefits are administered by one of six MCOs. All six cover the clinical continuum of substance use treatment for SUD; pick yours for plan-specific authorization detail.

MAT on Kentucky Medicaid

All six MCOs cover MAT for OUD: Suboxone, Subutex (used during pregnancy), methadone (via OTP), Vivitrol, and oral naltrexone. For AUD: naltrexone, acamprosate, and disulfiram are also covered. Read more about Medicaid MAT coverage.

Kentucky's 1115 waiver and residential rehab

The federal IMD exclusion historically prevented Medicaid from paying for residential SUD treatment in facilities larger than 16 beds. Kentucky's 1115 waiver lifts this restriction, so Medicaid members can access residential rehab at full-size licensed facilities.

Dual diagnosis

Kentucky Medicaid administers behavioral health and SUD services as a unified benefit. Integrated treatment for co-occurring depression, anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar plus SUD is fully covered. See dual-diagnosis treatment.
